Bonus Episode: Jon and Andy are off to the Practical Classics Show at the NEC

Send us a text

After pulling a few strings (and featuring Danny Hopkins, the editor of Practical Classics in a previous episode) Andy and Jon have secured media passes for the show on Sunday 24th March, and will be wandering the halls of the NEC in a bid to meet as many people as possible.
On top of that, equipped with the crowd funded Zoom Podtrak machine, there will be the potential to record some audio for another episode whilst there too.

Add into the mix of this bonus, a discussion on the Bromley Pageant of Motoring, a Christmas day car show in London and Porsche 911 Targa that left a lasting impression with Jon's eldest half brother.

Hope you enjoy this short and sweet bonus episode. Normal service resumes next week.

[00:00:00] Welcome to My Dads Car, Enjoy!

[00:00:12] Welcome to My Dads Car, a podcast discussing our personal relationship with automotive nostalgia

[00:00:18] and you know what?

[00:00:19] It doesn't even have to be about your dad's car.

[00:00:21] It can be your mum's, your grand, your parents, guardians or even her neighbours.

[00:00:26] If it made an impression, let's talk about it.

[00:00:33] So yeah we're excited to go up to the practical classic show at the end of March.

[00:00:40] We've managed to secure some media passes, isn't it?

[00:00:43] We have, you know, on the black there are a little bit of some ice but we can't say that.

[00:00:48] We're seasoned professionals in the media industry.

[00:00:52] Well, we've got four seasons.

[00:00:54] Yeah, so yeah that should be good fun.

[00:00:56] Obviously, Danny Hopkins who we had on season two I think is the editor of the magazine

[00:01:01] and it'd be nice to catch up with him up there.

[00:01:04] I'm sure we're going to bump into a bunch of other people.

[00:01:07] So we're going to be there on Sunday.

[00:01:09] Oh, wait.

[00:01:10] That's the plan with our Zoom pod track machine which means we can record in person on the

[00:01:15] fly.

[00:01:16] It's starting here.

[00:01:17] So Sunday 23rd of March I believe it is.

[00:01:19] Yeah.

[00:01:20] So yeah if you're at the show then look out for us wandering around.

[00:01:23] Hopefully not becoming too much of a nuisance for people trying to ask them about their

[00:01:27] ideas, calm memories.

[00:01:29] And yeah if you're going to be there then yeah let us know we'll try and put this out

[00:01:32] with a little bit of time to spare so that people are aware of our presence and then whatever

[00:01:38] we manage to record up there will then put together in a little bonus episode I suppose

[00:01:42] to go out after the show.

[00:01:43] Absolutely.

[00:01:44] Yeah, hopefully it should be a good little mingle event for us.

[00:01:47] Yeah, we've not done a kind of a proper event if we really since bangers and cash that

[00:01:51] was our sort of debut.

[00:01:52] So that was their debut show as well, I was not think so.

[00:01:56] Yeah, it would be interesting to do this sort of established show and see if we can meet

[00:02:00] yeah.

[00:02:01] Got a whole load of business cards toward her make sure I can work the machine.

[00:02:04] Yeah.

[00:02:05] And have a proper test on that.

[00:02:06] Full-ass fails we've got our iPhones in the way.

[00:02:08] Yeah, true.

[00:02:09] Yeah.

[00:02:10] I've got some little microphones actually that plug into iPhones as well.

[00:02:12] Okay.

[00:02:13] Which we could take but we can do it on the proper thing then hopefully the audio quality

[00:02:16] will be up to scratch and we can put it out.

[00:02:19] Yeah.

[00:02:20] I've invested in a chap actually called we blog any car.

[00:02:24] All right, which is a nice little pun and he asked whether we were going to that and

[00:02:30] a possibility we may bump into Paul Cowland who was the chap that's.

[00:02:34] Oh yeah.

[00:02:35] Helen recommended as well.

[00:02:36] Yeah.

[00:02:37] So he may well be up there so his sort of scene.

[00:02:40] Yeah.

[00:02:41] So yeah, even grab so minutes with these sort of people.

[00:02:44] Yeah, yeah.

[00:02:45] And it's face to name isn't it as we found with bangers and cash when we start talking

[00:02:48] into people you start meeting them maybe kind of touch base with those guys again.

[00:02:51] Yeah.

[00:02:52] And go look, yeah we're still doing this.

[00:02:54] Yeah.

[00:02:55] Amazingly year on we've not run out of energy and yeah, when you come onto our show and

[00:02:59] talk to us.

[00:03:00] Yeah.

[00:03:01] So yeah, that would be good.

[00:03:02] What else do you need to know?

[00:03:03] They do a well they used to use to do a car show in Bromley I think it's called like

[00:03:08] the Bromley.

[00:03:09] The Bromley pageant.

[00:03:10] Yeah close it up isn't there because they you let and shut it down.

[00:03:13] Yeah.

[00:03:14] It's always been a my to do list to go up there because obviously it's not far from

[00:03:17] here, but that's not going to happen.

[00:03:20] Yeah, it's just the Tesla owners club have signed up for this year.

[00:03:23] Yeah.

[00:03:24] Yeah, it seems a bit extreme to cancel.

[00:03:27] It's only one day isn't it to take your car there so yeah, I suppose I guess they're

[00:03:32] just trying to make a point perhaps.

[00:03:34] Yeah, I guess either that or I don't know whether you had to pay to go or whatever, but

[00:03:38] it's obviously costs involved with putting that thing on like a venue hire or staff and

[00:03:43] security and yeah, adding £12.50 to the ticket prices.

[00:03:47] It's a bit of an ask isn't it?

[00:03:49] Yeah, I just need to relocate it's own then or hold it on Christmas day.

[00:03:53] Then they get it for very true, very true.

[00:03:56] Yeah, yeah, Mr Trick there.

[00:03:58] Yeah, yeah, have to put that idea forward Andy.

[00:04:00] Could be on the summit there.

[00:04:02] A Christmas day classic car show.

[00:04:05] Yeah, formally Bromley pageant and for you know in a year's time because there's so many

[00:04:09] car shows going on in central the U Les charge or triple or something on Christmas day

[00:04:13] only.

[00:04:14] Yeah, I'd be quite fun wouldn't it imagine if that happened and then yeah obviously a bunch

[00:04:18] of restaurants all opened up so you could just book into all these different sort of restaurants

[00:04:23] in sort of central London.

[00:04:25] The only people would be there are the people who are going for a car show.

[00:04:28] Exactly.

[00:04:29] Yeah, and yeah, you just park up bank holiday so potentially you've not got to buy a parking

[00:04:33] ticket.

[00:04:34] Yeah, I think that's probably the case.

[00:04:35] I'm sure they'd have a parking warden out wouldn't they naturally just yeah, yeah,

[00:04:39] in the Santa's outfit just to sort of lighten the light and the mood.

[00:04:44] You get a Christmas card on your windscreen and then you open it up and ever surprise and

[00:04:49] you open it up with fines or 120 if you don't pay within three days or something.

[00:04:55] Yeah, a wheel clamp with flashing LED bulbs and tinsel at the edge.

[00:05:03] And if you don't pay it he hitches it up to like five reindeer but no drag your car off

[00:05:07] to the compound.

[00:05:08] Yeah, that'd be good, wouldn't it?

[00:05:12] Wonderful.

[00:05:13] Okay, I didn't tell the story but there's a story that my eldest half brother got the

[00:05:18] same dad basically.

[00:05:21] He told a story years ago dad used to be in a job of repossessing stuff.

[00:05:25] Okay, including cars.

[00:05:27] Yeah, and he said once he repossessed a Porsche Targa, it probably would have been around

[00:05:32] the 70s.

[00:05:33] Yeah, yeah.

[00:05:34] And he said he picked him up from school in it and it was bright yellow.

[00:05:36] Oh nice.

[00:05:37] He said that it was a very vivid memory in his mind sitting in the back of this Targa

[00:05:41] with dad driving.

[00:05:43] And actually he said that inspired him to want to get a Porsche when he got older.

[00:05:47] Okay, we did actually have one for a short period and you were Porsche obviously.

[00:05:50] I'm fantastic.

[00:05:51] Yeah, that's cool isn't it?

[00:05:52] That's what we found with all of this.

[00:05:54] You start having these conversations and just little memories do sort of just unlock

[00:05:58] it.

[00:05:59] Yeah, yeah.

[00:06:00] I could like, cool.

[00:06:01] Oh no, I'll leave you to it.

[00:06:02] I will speak to you soon.

[00:06:03] Yeah.

[00:06:04] Cheers buddy.

[00:06:05] See you later.

[00:06:07] Thank you for listening to my doubts, can't.

[00:06:10] I hope you enjoyed the show.
