It has been a fantastic twelve months for us here at the My Dad's Car Podcast and we're incredibly pleased with how far things have come along during that time. Here's to another fantastic year ahead, but for now, a brief look back at what's been going on since we launched in February 2023.
4000 Downloads & Counting...
We've hit several milestones that we are extremely proud of in our debut year and to be honest, we've been bowled over by the support and kindness shown by everyone that has taken the time to have a listen.
We are now entering our fourth season of the podcast and cannot thank each and every guest that has been kind enough to spare us the hour or so it takes to sit down and record with us. As podcasts go, we're novices and in order for us to run and produce them, it takes a bit of juggling around our day time jobs! But, we've done it and we're really enjoying it. And, it seems we're not the only ones enjoying it. We've gone past 4000 downloads in the space of a year, small fry for some we know, but we're chuffed none the less.
We've also managed to find ourselves charting as high as the top 20 for automotive podcasts, proper nose bleed territory for us at this stage and quite remarkable given some of the established names that are already there.
We Took A Road Trip For Bangers & Cash Live!
Last summer we were lucky enough to be asked along to appear on a Q&A at the inaugural Bangers & Cash Live event in North Yorkshire. We of course said yes and enjoyed a fantastic weekend at the event getting the chance to meet plenty of people who love to have a chat about all things car nostalgia. This was a great opportunity for us to meet a few people off the tele too, some of which we're hoping to feature on our podcast in the future!
A Selection of Highlights So Far...
There have been some fantastic stories along the way from all of our guests, not to mention too many great cars of the past to name in full. We've gathered a few of our personal favourites for this blog. As we always say though, it's not necessarily about the car or even the dad! Our guests have recited some fantastic nuggets of gold along the way, from retro air fresheners, to renting cassettes from the local library for a long-haul trip, there are countless memories being unlocked with each and every recording.
Is there a more iconic car air freshener than the taxi driver's special mirror-hanging traffic light?! Ed Jenkins from Season 3 episode 1 certainly loves them.
A picture of Southern Cars, courtesy of our guest Sam who told fond stories of her father's running of a car dealership she has now proudly taken the reigns of.
Here is Brian, Sara’s Dad, stood proudly by his Chrysler / Talbot Alpine as mentioned in the podcast. The second picture is a crop of a painting he did which featured the same dark blue vehicle parked at the side of the road. Sara found out in later life that her father had the same job role as Q from James Bond!
Matt Glassup's dad was a drag racing fanatic and this is the very same Capri Matt talks about in season 1.
Surprisingly, when quizzed, Jill Miller said the vehicle her Dad had, that she would want to own the most was a classic Massey Ferguson Tractor.
Ben recalls a family trip to Saint-Tropez in a blue Mk5 Escort estate, with him, his Dad, Mum, younger brother and sister.
They rented cassette tapes from the library to keep them entertained and stayed in touch with his Grandparents in their Shogun, who were also driving down to the South of France by using his Dad’s CB radio.
Thank You!
We sincerely thank all of the people that have been generous enough to buy us a coffee along the way as it genuinely does help us to produce an even more polished pod for you to listen to. We're excited to have invested in some new bits of equipment that will even allow us to go on the road and do some in-person recordings this year too, keep your eyes peeled for that!
Our first outing of the year will be at the Practical Classics Event being held at the NEC in Birmingham this March. We'll be there on Sunday the 23rd - come say hi if you happen to see us!
Cheers, Andy and Jon.
