Welcome to my dad's car. Enjoy!
AndyWelcome to my dad's car, a podcast discussing our personal relationship with automotive discount. And you know what? It doesn't even have to be about your dad's car. It can be your mum's, your grand, your parents, guardians, or even a neighbour's. If it made an impression, let's talk about it. I sat in the office yesterday actually, I think, and a silver one went past the office window.
JonNice.
AndyBut yeah, I was like, what? What's that Diablo doing there?
JonI remember I had a 138 scale yellow one.
AndyOkay. Barrago. Barago, yeah.
JonYou know. Yeah.
AndyYeah, I've got a red, I think Ferrari 308 or 328 by uh Barago, yeah.
JonI've still got quite a few Barragos in boxes somewhere. Worthless.
AndyYeah, my Ferrari, the the boxes sort of squish, so the plastic sort of plastic discolors, doesn't it? And then sort of goes brittle.
JonYeah. And then maybe a bit discoloured.
AndyYeah. Yeah, I guess there were so many of them you could get them everywhere, couldn't you?
JonI used to get mum in in Woolworths, I seem to remember. Oh yeah. Yeah. Bottom shelf job.
AndyYeah. Well, yeah, I do find the models interesting.
JonI used I remember went for a stage of getting the occasional one off QVC, the shopping channel.
AndyI don't think I've ever bought anything off QVC.
JonNo, that's it.
AndyThat literally I remember like Did you do it or it was your parents who were buying it? Well it'd be my mum, yeah. You were mum, mum, mum, buy me one of them.
JonYeah, it would be like Dad would be probably down the pub. So I'll just be flicking through the channels. And uh yeah, we had Skylight back in the early days, and obviously, yeah, yeah. There's probably like one of each channel that was kind of new, and QBC turned up, and they used to do like these hour-long car-only shows. So I'd just end up getting like a random American muscle car or something. So mum, can you buy that for me? Like 16 quid.
AndyYou can have to dig them out, your models. You got them at home, right? Yum's.
JonYeah, I think they might be in my brother's loft. They're still around somewhere. Yeah.
AndyYeah, I'd have to dig them out.
JonWe'd have to uh there were loads of them. We used to have this black like shelving stand and they'd all just be out on there collecting dust.
AndyYeah, I know what you mean, yeah. Pre-IKEA.
JonYeah, yeah.
AndyMFI or MFI, yeah, we're doing with like the black ash almost finished, not not gloss black. Yeah, that's it. Yeah, yeah, I know. Well, yeah.
JonLovely. Yeah, the glory is Goodman's Hi-Fi on there as well, probably. High speed dubbing. Yeah. Yeah, I'll have to dig that out. I remember we used to um Matt and I used to get the camcorder and then like do sort of zoomed in put the car on like some gravel or something like that, and then make out it's like a real Oh yeah, early early editing. Put some music over the top of it. Nice. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Obviously, it should have a natural flair there for automotive video and uh yeah.
AndyI remember my brother made a video with some action men, I think. And similar sort of thing. We'd kind of set something up in the garden and decided like he was driving a Jeep around and it would not sort of stop animation, but you try and film it obviously, so you kind of hide your hands though.
JonYeah, yeah, yeah. Do you remember those um big-headed football figures that were floating around in the mid-90s? Corinthians made them vaguely.
AndyI might have had a Shearer one.
JonThey were like on a sort of green platform.
AndyA bit of a fan of Shearer back in the day, actually.
JonYeah, yeah. It wasn't. But we used to put those in front of the camera as well and sort of make up our own press conferences like a bit of cardboard in front. I have like Stuart Pierce and Paul Lentz. Your own match of the day, yeah. Dubbing the voices over. Did you put on different accents? Oh yeah, yeah. Like, oh yeah, we thought it was quite a good game in that game with two halves, all these different football cliches. Yeah. Fantastic. They're probably fighting around somewhere still, those videos. Lost tapes. Yeah, yeah. Remember it's a JVC camcorder. It's one of those ones where it had sort of like a smallish cassette went into the camcorder, and then you had a large VHS and the small cassette went in. Yeah, yeah. It's a sort of invention that was very of its time.
AndyYeah, then you had to have wires across the lounge, didn't you? Where it all plugged in the telly and like your dad's there trying to edit it or whatever on the screen. And and yeah.
JonThere used to be a gala in Bogner, and we used to go. I remember dad filmed the whole thing once. Oh, really? Which also still exists somewhere.
AndyUm that'd be awesome, yeah. Dig that out.
JonBut um, it was I remember if you try to watch it back, it was so jiggly, it just used to make me feel sick. It was just yeah, it'd be good to find that because I I think I was filming in the back of the Merc as he was like driving us there and stuff, so it'd be Yeah, yeah. Yeah, quite funny. Whether it can be done or not, I'm not sure.
AndyYeah, you might be able to if the filming's all jiggly, but you might be able to pull stills out of it. Yeah, I would imagine so. Like if you can get it on a screen and you just then screenshot it or whatever, you might then, yeah, there might be something worth saving from it.
JonYeah, to dig them out one day.
AndyOh, cool. Yeah, yeah. And we'll have to include our uh our chat about Barrago models as a bonus episode, might be in the future.
JonYeah, I don't really see the point in them either. I they're the sort of thing that garages used to have in their office. They'd have maybe a couple.
AndyMy nan used to do the old she'd go to a petrol station and collect like the vouchers, and then like, yeah, one day she'd turn up and she'd just present you with a yeah, Mr.
JonBean's Mini or something like that.
AndyYeah, a Jaguar, but it wouldn't be like the top one. It would just be like, oh, here you go, here's a Ford Mondeo and like Yeah, thanks.
JonThat's probably more desirable now, isn't it? Something very mundane of its time.
AndyYeah, if you spent whatever it was, 20, 30 quid or something, maybe odd shell.
JonGot a free I think I've got a Bugatti EB110. I've got one of those as well, silver one.
AndyBlue one one, I think.
JonBarago.
AndyOh, is it?
JonYeah.
AndyNo, I think this is in a little uh the petrol station special. But yeah, I'll dig them back out again.
JonI think my Bugatti might have actually been a 118 scale and is uh Oh really? Big one, yeah. Nice that might have been a QVC, QVC one essentially.
AndyYeah. Yeah. These days I've got a small Hot Wheels addiction, so Yeah, I see that. I've uh kind of gather those with some sort of rated knots.
JonEnd up like um Danny.
AndyYeah, I don't yeah, I don't think I've um different level that is. Don't think I've gotten it early enough to be uh trading for those sort of numbers, but yeah, if I keep them for 10, 20 years and they go up two, three times in value, then they're only taking up a shoebox or so under my bed.
JonSo yeah, yeah, true, true.
AndyOkay, lovely. Okay, alright, mate. I'll leave you to it, John. It's been a pleasure. As always, yeah. Wrap it up, roll the credits.
